SS America, a 723ft luxury liner, was launched in 1939. Unfortunately her launch coincided with Hitler's invasion of Poland and she was rapidly converted into a troop carrier. Post war she resumed cruising and in the seventies (renamed SS Australis)shipped passengers from Europe to Australia and New Zealand. After years of failed comebacks as a cruise ship, she was under tow from Greece to the far east when her towing lines snapped in a force 12 storm off the west coast of Fuerteventura. She broke in half on this sand bar and the stern section sank. The bow is proved a tad more resilient - this happended in 1994. This image was taken in June 2005. Since 2006 the bow section has gradually slipped beneath the waves. On my last visit in January 2009, only a small section of the bow was visible. Search Alan Dawson photography to see various images of the ship from 2005 until 2009. Below is a list of the different names the ship has had over the years. SS America (—1941, 1946–1964, 1978) USS West Point AP-23 (1941–1946) SS America (1978) SS Australis (1964–1978) SS Italis (1978–1980) SS Noga (1980–1984) SS Alferdoss (1984–1993) SS American Star (1994)
