My article: "Ice diving in the Arctic" There is something in severe Arctic beauty that attracts you again and again. And you come back to this land to see all its colours in all seasons. Arctic winter is really something extraordinary! The White Sea begins in Murmansk and flows towards the South across the Polar (Arctic) Circle. Due to a big amount of islands it may seem that you are not at the sea but on a lake or a river. There no habitual sea expanses where water mergers into horizon. Wherever you look you will always see land. Islands merge together and seem to be unified whole. In order to understand why the White Sea is called White you need to come here in winter. Arctic winter begins in November and ends in mid April. During all this period the Sea freezes over and it’s covered with snow white blanket. In mid March when spring comes to central Europe I set out to the Arctic. To be more precise, to the place where it begins- the Polar Circle- to a diving center of the same name. I had contacted the dive center in advance. Then I took a train Moscow-Murmansk and reached the station of Chupa where I had been already awaited. I got on a bus and in about two hours almost in the morning I reached the place. While I was unpacking my diving and photo equipment it was already morning. After breakfast we were given introductory instructions for new arrivals, then had a general briefing and set out to dive. Having loaded all our equipment into the sledge we climbed onto a snowmobile and set out to a check dive. After twenty minutes ride on crunchy snow we reached the place. It was a spring freezing morning. The bright sun reflecting from snow was dazzling our eyes. It was cold, it was “ – 25”. The water was “almost warm”, -2. A triangular diving hole in shape of our diving center “logotype” had been already prepared for us....
