French textile designers have long found inspiration from imported East Indian fabrics and reinterpreted the style, whilst drawing on the flora of their own country. Their designs and locally produced fabrics became known as "indiennes". The cotton border fabric shown is by "Souleiado" and is a vividly coloured indienne example, featuring a crimson rose. The Souleiado company began in 1947 and for many decades was highly successful; however in recent years it's popularity has declined. In 2009 a museum was set up to explain both the history of indienne fabrics and the Souleiado company in celebration of their timeless designs.
