The name, alternatively, may be derived from the Teton Sioux. Mount Moran was named after landscape artist, Thomas Moran, who travelled north of the Teton Range to Yellowstone with the hayden Expedition in 1871. His sketches and watercolours helped popularise Yellowstone as the world's first national park.
