Sera monastery lies at the foot of Tatipu Hill, on the southern slope of Serawoza mountain in the northern suburbs of Lhasa. Along with Drepung, and Ganden it is one of the most famous monasteries in Lhasa. It is one of the six main monasteries in the Gelugpa or Yellow hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism and was founded by Sagya Yexie, one of the disciples of Tsongkhapa (founder of Gelugpa) in 1419. It’s full name is Sera Thekchen-ling Monastery which has been interpreted by some as hail stone, by others as raspberry and one Chinese interpretation suggests that Sera means Rose in the Tibetan language because when the monastery was built the hill behind was covered in wild roses. It is the most famous place in Tibet to see the daily monks debating ritual.
