Mark Hunter MBE (and crewmate Zac Purchase) proved they are back at their best by dominating the final of the lightweight men's double scull at the 2010 World Rowing Championships on New Zealand's Lake Karapiro to become World Champions in a time of 7:13.47. Italy won silver and New Zealand the bronze. In 2008 Mark raced in the lightweight men's double with Zac Purchase and they were the only crew in World Rowing to be unbeaten in every race. They topped the World Cup series and produced majestic form at the Olympics to win GB's first ever lightweight medal and Olympic gold. In the final they dominated the race to produce an emphatic victory. Mark was awarded an MBE in the 2009 New Year's Honours list in recognition of his achievement. Ross Hunter learned to row at Poplar, Blackwall and District Rowing Club under the guidance of his father. He has represented GB at junior, U23 and senior levels. In 1999 he won gold at the World Junior Championships in the coxed four. Two years later at the U23 World Championships he finished 4th in the lightweight four, and won a bronze in the lightweight pair in 2003. In 2006 Ross was selected for the senior team, finishing 4th in the lightweight quad at the World Championships. He also works as a Waterman and Lighterman on the River Thames.
