Rojales is a village in the province of Alicante and autonomous community of Valencia, Spain. The municipality covers an area of 27.6 square kilometres (10.7 sq mi) and as of 2011 had a population of 21583 people. The village is on the banks of the River Segura , which crosses the traditional core along two kilometers on his last journey before emptying into the Mediterranean, a fact that justifies the existence of a beautiful bridge of ashlar masonry built in the days of King Carlos III, superbly conserved and still in use. At the moment it is a municipality with strong increase of activities of the service sector, but that conserves all its charm. It has a very important cultural activity around its many museums (Archaeological, Museum of the Orchard, Easter and EcoMuseo), and theater, home of the National Contest of Nanas and Carols, one of the longest and most important of the country . At the same time, a great rehabilitation work has been carried out in the Barrio de las Cuevas, which is now a habitat for handicrafts. The existence of several high-quality residential housing estates has originated important population groups from other European countries, most of them English and German. Rojales has the golf course La Marquesa, one of the oldest in the province. The Al-Mudawwar farmstead (Almodóvar) stands out in the surroundings of the fortified hill of Cabezo Soler and the slopes of the Inquisición Grande, a medieval settlement that can be considered the Muslim Rojales and that give origin to one of the traditions of the Area, the legend of La Encantá. Rojales is surrounded by the irrigated orchard, a irrigation that flourishes with the late medieval enlargement of the irrigation network in the last sections of the river Segura. This will condition the current location of the municipality and its urban hydraulic complex, which has a monumental character, being represented by the Azud, the Boqueras of the major canals, the Ferris wheel, and the bridge.
