Ruins of the ancient fortification known as 'The Rock of Dunamase' near Portlaoise town Ireland. Occupied for over 1000 years. First known settlement was Dun Masc, which was pillaged by Vikings in 842 AD.. In the 1100's the Normans under Strongbow came into possession and may be responsible for the building now in ruins. The Fort returned to Irish control in 14th century when taken by the O'Moores. Said to have been besieged by Cromwell's forces in 1651 and blown up. In 1795 Sir John Parnell tried to develop a residence here but it was never completed and now the structure is in state hands.
