Robt. Burns & Nanse Tinnock the Hostess at Mauchline, an engraving from a book about Robert Burns published in 1805. Burns moved to live near Mauchline from 1784 to 1786. Nance Tinnock kept an alehouse in the town. Burns poem "The Author's Earnest Cry And Prayer" of 1786 mentions Nance Tinnock:- "Tell you guid bluid o' auld Boconnock's, I'll be his debt twa mashlum bonnocks, An' drink his health in auld Nance Tinnock's Nine times a-week, If he some scheme, like tea an' winnocks, Was kindly seek". Burns also wrote "The Belles of Mauchline" "In Mauchline there dwells six proper young belles, The pride of the place and its neighbourhood a', Their carriage and dress, a stranger would guess, In London or Paris they'd gotten it a'. Miss Millar is fine, Miss Markland's divine, Miss Smith she has wit, and Miss Betty is brave, There's beauty and fortune to get wi' Miss Morton; But Armour's the jewel for me o' them a'. ".
