Only two Sistine Chapel Ceilings exist in the world. One was painted in 1508 by Michaelangelo Boneratti and is located in Vatican City, Rome, Italy. The second was painted in 1988 by Gary Bevans in Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex, England. A labour of faith and love, Gary Bevans began work on his Sistine Chapel Ceiling Reproduction after a pilgrimage to Rome in 1987. A convert to the Roman Catholic Church at 17, a signwriter by trade, husband and father, the project was an inspired gift to the Church that he undertook when he was just 33 years old. The entire Ceiling fit the modern Catholic Church roof, a feat he marvelled at when he reached the end and it fit perfectly. Five years of neck aches, climbing scaffolding, painting into the early hours of the morning, finding himself under the world media's eyes and painting 500 individual figures led to a memorable Mass of Thanksgiving in November 1993 to mark the completion where he was presented with a Papal Award from Pope John Paul the Great. Learn all about this unique undertaking and the agonies and the ecstacies when you singlehandedly paint the Sistine Chapel Ceiling.
