The beekeeper is scraping the propolis (a resinous substance that bees use to maintain their hive) off the queen excluder. The queen excluder is a grid that is placed between the lower part of a bee hive, the brood box, where the queen lays eggs and the upper part where honey is stored. This keeps the queen out of the honey storage areas and prevents the honey being contaminated with eggs and larvae. It is believed that bees use propolis for a variety of reasons - reinforce the structure of the hive; - reduce vibration; - make the hive more defensible - prevent diseases and parasites from entering - to inhibit fungal and bacterial growth - prevent putrefaction within the hive.
