The Shah Mosque is a public mosque sitting at the south end of the huge Naghsh-e Jahan square. It is one of the great treasures of Persian architecture from the Safavid period, and it, and both it and the square it sits on, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its construction was ordered by the first Shah Abbas of Persia in 1611 and it was finished in 1629. It is an architectural masterpiece with its beautiful seven coloured mosaic tiles and calligraphic inscriptions. The double colonnaded Maidan (shops) around the perimeter of the huge square sells a variety of handicrafts and souvenirs.
