The College was founded in 1347 by the widowed Mary de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke, making it the third oldest college in Cambridge. Its original name, Hall of Valance, was changed first to Pembroke Hall and in 1856 it became Pembroke College. Its original chapel, the first church within a Cambridge college, is now a library. Its present chapel was designed by Christopher Wren and extended by George Gilbert Scott. The college has many fine buildings and garden areas on its extensive site, the latest being Foundress Court completed in 1997. The youngest ever British Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger was at Pembroke. Other famous alumni include the politician R A Butler, the inventor Ray Dolby, the poet Ted Hughes, the novelist Tom Sharpe and the cricketer Peter May.
