Pajara, Fuerteventura, Canary Isles, Spain. The town's church, Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Regla, was built between 1687 and 1711. There is discussion as to whether the design of the church's facade was influenced by Aztec art or by the emblem book, the Iconology of Cesare Ripa (1593); the latter was an Italian aesthetician who died in Rome in 1622. His book was used by artists to give substance to qualities such as virtue, courage and wisdom. The church is open from 11am till 1pm and 5pm till 7pm. Pajara, by Fuerteventura's standards, is unusually leafy and green. It has a population of 700. The Canaries are a group of islands lying 100 kilometres to the west of the north African coast.
