The College was founded in 1352 by two town guilds, the Guild of Corpus Christi and the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary possibly as an act of thanksgiving for the passing away of the devastating Black Death from Cambridge. Its Old Court dates from its foundation and is reputed to be the oldest complete college court in Cambridge. Its New Court was designed by the architect William Wilkins and built in 1830. Its modern Taylor Library and the unique Corpus Christi Clock on King’s Parade were added in the 21st century. For many years it was known as Bene’t College rather than by its formal name. The College’s most important possession is the Parker Library which contains some of the most valuable manuscripts extant, including the Canterbury Gospels brought to England by St Augustine in 597 AD, the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, the Bury Bible and many other unique works. It also has a fine collection of pre-Civil War silver pieces. Among its alumni are Christopher Marlowe, Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of Elizabeth I, and the scientist Stephen Hales noted for his studies of transpiration in plants and blood pressure in animals.
