Weitere Informationen:
On the outskirts of Winkleigh village are the remains of an ancient fort. The site was bisected in 1942 when a new main road was needed to transport aircraft to the wartime airfield. Court Castle is an earth mound with part of the original ditch. It is in good condition and contains archaeological evidence of its Norman military importance. The motte and bailey are thought to date to the 11th or early 12th centuries. It was still in use as a fort in Medieval times and probably up until the time that fortifications were no longer the impregnable edifices that they once were, with the widespread use of gunpowder. During the eighteenth century a brick built banqueting house was constructed on the mound. Remains of it can still be found today although they are rapidly falling into disrepair. Several interesting features can still be identified including this ‘Two Drip’ feature to keep the external walls dry.
