Franz Hals (c. 1582–1666) was born in southern Netherlands—what is today Belgium. A Dutch Golden Age painter, Hals is credited as a revolutionary in the field of portraiture. He was particularly known for the way he captured light and atmosphere. Shown here is Officers of the Shooting Guild of St. Adriaen, painted in 1633. The second of the Officers grouping, it is the finest of all the five "Schutters-Doelen" at Haarlem. Clever arrangement of figures and instantaneous catch of characters - for example, many of the officers have their eyes on viewer, inviting viewer to join in the fun. Among his works are Banquet of the Officers of the St George Civic Guard, Catharina Hooft and her Nurse, Gipsy Girl, and Malle Babbe.
