New cycle route signs to St John s Brookwood and Town Centre on the Basingstoke Canal at Langman s Bridge Goldsworth Park Woking Surrey UK In June 2008 Woking Borough Council and Surrey County Council secured 1 82 million from Cycling England to be spent on improving cycling facilities in the area The original Woking Cycle network was signposted using the standard layout as indicated within the Traffic Signs and Road Markings Regulations 2002 Routes are now being re branded using a Planets Theme based on War of the Worlds by H G Wells who resided in Woking during the late 1800s The main routes will be named after the planets and links off these routes will be named after the planets moons Each route will be named as a trail therefore the Basingstoke Canal will become the Saturn Trail Each Planet Trail will have its own distinct colour as a band on the sign with the Saturn trail colour being yellow but on these signs it is more orange The signs will also show times in minutes instead of distances in miles The Saturn trail is the name given to the newly surfaced Basingstoke Canal towpath that links many of the Woking neighbourhoods with the town centre It is also designated as Sustrans National Cycle Route 221 Other trails to be opened shortly include the Mars and Pluto trails See http www woking gov uk transport cyclewoking cyclewokingproject pdf
