The Neue Wache has been the central memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1993. Constructed from 1816 to 1818 as a memorial for those who fell in the Napoleonic wars. In 1931, Heinrich Tessenow created a "Memorial for Those Who Fell in the Great War" here. From 1960, the restored building was the GDR's "Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism." In 1969, the remains of an unknown soldier and an unknown prisoner from a concentration camp were laid to rest here. After reunification, the Neue Wache became the memorial to the victims of fascism and militarism. The centre of the chamber today is occupied by the enlarged sculpture "Mother with dead son" by Käthe Kollwitz.
