Bengal Native Infantry was part of the organisation of the British Colonial Army before the Indian rebellion of 1857. The regiment underwent frequent changes of numbering during its period of existence. The traditional formation of British Regiments was to have a hierachy whereby the "1st Regiment" is the oldest and the highest number is the youngest. In 1764, the Bengal Native Infantry renumbered so that the regiments were numbered according to the seniority of their captain. The vast majority of the Bengal Native Infantry regiments rebelled in the Indian Rebellion of 1857
