View looking down on Napier Terrace, a row of terraced houses beside the historic Saint Bartholemew's Burial Yard. The picture also shows more recent properties in Exe Street. Saint Bartholemew's Burial Yard has been in existence since 1636 when the Cathedral burial ground became overcrowded but, by the 1830's this too became full. The cholera epidemic of 1832 exacerbated the situation with many poor souls being buried in Bury meadow. So, in 1834 it was decided to build the New or Lower Cemetery and catacombs, which took place between 1835 and 1836. The cemetery was closed in 1949 with 17, 500 interments and the catacombs being abandoned as a failed concept with only 16 bodies being interred.
