Haze and smoke filter through trees during the aftermath of a fire in a Longleaf Pine Forest Pinus palustris Florida USA. By Carol Dembinsky Dembinsky Photo Associates. Many forest fires along the southeast coastal plain of the United States are intentionally set. Such fires are "tools" used by foresters to manage these fire-dependent ecological systems. Many more fires are set by natural means such as lightning strikes; and other causes such as careless smokers, campers, and even arson. In populated areas, if these forests are not managed through controlled burns, by eliminating or cutting back the natural build-up of pine litter, branches, etc ( fire load ) such fires can quickly get out of control and become a real threat to people and property.
