Sooty the glove puppet was created by Harry Corbett in 1948. The puppet, as old film at the tableau indicates, was bought in a novelty shop at the end of the North Pier. Soot was used to blacken the ears and nose, hence the name 'Sooty', to make the yellow puppet stand out on 1950s monochrome television. The dog Sweep was an early Sooty friend.
