Odin was the powerful ruler of the Aesir, the main gods in Norse mythology. His name means "fury" or "frenzy" and he played a major role in myths about the creation and the destruction of the world. Geirrod was brother of Agnar, both sons of King Hraudung. Geirrod reported falsely to Odin that Agnar had drowned. Later, after Geirrod was king, a visitor named Grimnir came to court - Geirrod had him tortured as a sorcerer (pictured here - Geirrod on the throne and Grimnir, hands tied, placed near a fire that singed him). Geirrod's son, named agnar, told his father that he thought his conduct toward Grimnir was not right. Grimnir then showed himself to be Odin. Geirrod went to attack Odin with his sword but tripped and fell on the his sword, killing himself. Odin put Grimnir's son on the throne. This illustration dates to around 1905.
