Crossness in South East London is the creation of Joseph Bazalgette, the engineer who created London's Sewerage system. The pumping station houses four huge beam engines (named after members of the Royal Family!) which pumped all the sewage from South London into a storage reservoir from which it was discharged into the sea. The engines were last used in the early 1950's, following which they were disabled. After an epic amount of volunteer work one of the engines (Prince Consort) is now working again. In addition to the engines the pumping station has excellent Victorian cast iron work; amazing when you think that it is a sewage works which it wasn't thought that anyone would visit! There is an elaborate octagon, this has also been restored by the volunteers and makes a visit worth-while on its own.
