Here someone has bricked up a hurricane Hugo damaged live oak tree creating a unique and contemplative symbol in the Abbey's gardens. Mepkin Abbey is a community of Roman Catholic Trappist-Cistercian monks located on the Cooper River just north of Charleston SC, in Moncks Corner. The monastery was founded in 1949 When philanthropist and publisher Henry and his wife Clare Booth Luce donated the former rice plantation to the monks. Henry Luce was the publisher of Time, Life, and Fortune magazine among many others, and was described as, "the most influential private citizen in the America of his day." Clare Booth Luce was ambassador to Italy and Brazil, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, an author, writer and playwright. They were described as one of the great "Power Couples" in American history.
