A coursed squared gritstone tower with ashlar dressings and containing a spiral stone staircase leading to an open viewing gallery comprising a circular stone cill with stone columns supporting a circular stone frieze, cornice and ashlar dome with flaming finial at the top. The gallery contains a powerful electric beacon lamp which is illuminated at night and visible from a great distance. The memorial's prominent location on a hill overlooking a disused quarry make it visible from seven counties, particularly large areas of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire - the traditional recruiting area of the Sherwood Foresters. © IWM (WMA-684) The beacon is a 28-inch searchlight with a luminous range of 38 miles and it will revolve when illuminated, (eight times per minute) so that it will be visible in several counties. It has been constructed by Messrs Chance Bros. & Co Ltd., Marine and Lighthouse Engineers. At image right is an Elizabethan style beacon similar to that used to signal the Spanish Armada entering the English Channel in 1588
