Sign for 'the Lang Scots Mile' in the Ayrshire town of Ayr. In Scotland, until the 18th Century, a mile could be variable but reckoned to be an average of 1984 yards and in England it was 1760 yardds. After the Union of Parliaments in 1701, the standard English measure was introduced to Scotland but it took until the end of the18th century to replace it completely. The Lang Scots mile is referred to in Robert Burns poem Tam O'Shanter. In 2002 South Ayrshire Council introduced a measured Lang Scots Mile starting at the sea front. This was to combine their links to Burns who was from that area and encourage people to take some exercise and walk a mile as part of a get healthier campaign. It has also become a tourist attraction.
