Man dressed as a Makishi posing to the camera by the Zambezi river bank. The Makishi is a character that for the northwestern peoples of Zambia living at the banks of the Zambezi river represent a manifestation of the spirit of a dead ancestor returning to the world of the living. The Makishi are tightly related to the ceremony of Mukanda in which young boys become men, being the Makishi's role to lead the boys in that transit and teach them how the will have to behave in the future. I met the man dressed as Makishi while he was working performing a dance in a touristic restaurant in Victoria Falls, since the Makishi and the Tonga people have a tight relationship with the Zambezi river, I wanted to portrait the Makishi close to its bank so one day we went together to take a few portraits of him nearby the river.
