Paint chemist Keith Harrison who has developed a paint recycling technique photographed at his workshops in Ford near Chichester West Sussex. Sussex company Newlife Paints tackles paint mountain or perhaps better described as 'paint flood'. Newlife Paints based in Ford West Sussex, was awarded Best Recycled Product 2010 for its recycled household paint at the National Recycling Awards. Keith Harrison, director of Newlife Paints said “What we have made is the ultimate eco-friendly paint, using 90 per cent waste products, and now we need to tell people about it – if the public asks for it, we can make it at an increasingly cost effective price and tackle the flood of waste paint going into landfill in the UK". Keith struck upon the idea whilst cleaning out his garage some years ago, when he found many tins of partly used old paint which needed disposing of because they were past their ‘sell by date’. As an experienced industrial chemist, he felt uncomfortable about the waste of so much of a commodity that was a potentially valuable resource and he later discovered that an estimated 50 million litres of old paint – some 14% of paint sold last year – is unused or stored in our garages.
