Waipio Valley is located on the Hamakua Coast - northeast shore of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is the largest of the many valleys of the Kohala Mountains. The Valley is a mile wide at the coastline and close to six miles deep. It has a beautiful black sand beach and towering waves. The valley's cliffs reaching almost 2000 feet on both sides and it has dozens of cascading waterfalls. Hiilawe, the biggest in the valley is one of Hawaii's most celebrated waterfalls. Waipio Valley is a sacred place for Hawaiians, it was the home of many kings and several important temples and burial sites.
