Marco Polo is believed to have traveled along this path. Marco Polo was a Venetian traveler who left Venice, Italy, with his father and brother in 1271; arrived in China in 1275, where Kublai Khan had his court; and returned home in 1294. The path descends from the mountains of Yun-nan Province in southwestern China into the Valley of Kinsha Kiang (what Polo called Brius and what translates as Gold Dust River).
