Over 90 years old when this photograph was taken, the rack railway on the mountain La Rhune is a spectacular ride to the summit and in many ways a journey into the past. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the summit, from where views across the Basque Country to St Jean de Luz, Ciboure, Hendaye and beyond are possible on a clear day. La Rhune is the first major summit in the Pyrenees from the Atlantic Coast. It is accessed from the Basque village of Ascain via the Col d'Ignace and the rack railway begins at the top of the Col. The Col continues down to Sare, which is near the border with Spain. La Rhune is historically important and was fought over during the Peninsular War.
