The tower of the abbey in Charroux Vienne France. This is the Charlemagne tower and part of L'abbaye Saint-Sauveur. charroux is designated as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' of which there are many. The building to the right is a bar called the Bar de L'abbaye, not surprisingly. The Holy prepuce, (the foreskin of Jesus) was presented to Charlemagne and was held at the abbey from 785 onwards. In the 12th century it was taken to Rome where the Pope declined to comment on it and then it was lost. In 1856 a workman found it again preserved in a wall in the abbey. By this time there was another Holy prepuce in a place called Calcatta. Rome was asked to decide which one was authentic and pronounced that anyone who spoke of the Holy prepuce in the future would be excommunicated and thus side stepped the issue.
