In Salinas de Guaranda there are multiple industries which are cooperatives, the workers own them and share in the profits. This is only one of the industries, a factory making cheese. Their products are exported to many countries, and are considered to be top of the line, including Italy, France, Germany, the United States, and Japan. Some of the industries are cheese, chocolate, candy, garment, meat (salami), footballs and herbs, to name only a few. The idea for the coops came from a Catholic priest who settled in Salinas in about 1970. He had just graduated from divinity school in Italy and was well versed in Liberation Theology. It was also a time when the large estancias were being broken up, which worked to their advantage. Father Antonia, as he is lovingly called by all, still lives and works in Salinas de Guaranda.
