Kodungallur Bharani, one of the oldest temple festivals in Kerala, is a part of the second annual festival of the Kodungallur Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy temple. The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Bhadrakali, but standard history shows that the former deity was Pathinikadavul Kannaki, the legendary heroine of Elanko Adikal’s tamil epic ‘Chilappathikaram’. The temple is believed to be built by Cheran Chenkuttuvan, a famous Chera king. The temple stands out for the peculiarity of the rituals held during the annual ‘Bharani’ festival (celebration conducted in the ‘Bharani’ day). The Bharani festival attracts a large number of oracles (‘Velichappad’ in local languge) from all over the state, especially from the northern districts like Palakkad, Malappuram etc. It is the only temple in Kerala where devotees worship the deity with abusive language. This ritual known as ‘Kavu theendal’ in Malayalam happens in the ‘Aswathy’ day, one day prior to the festival day. The annual Bharani festival falls in the month of ‘Meenam’ (March-April). The temple is easily accessible. The nearest railway station is Irinjalakuda, 20 kilometers away.
