Kaukana is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites of Ragusa, the area is located between Punta Secca and Marina di Ragusa and was an ancient village of the late imperial and Byzantine era (IV-VII century A.D.), destroyed during the Arab occupation. The special feature of the site is due to the excellent state of preservation of some buildings thanks coverage of sea sand. Inside the park the remains of a large Byzantine basilica are visible three naves with presbyterium and iconostasis, while outside at dell'abisde, are arranged radially a series of anthropomorphic tombs complete coverage. Towards the beach are the remains almost intact the entire Byzantine house complete with access stairs to the second floor. Kaukana was once an important commercial port and landed here and soggorno with his army, Belisario before facing the island was conquered by the Byzantine Empire. This center tells us about the historian Procopius of Caesarea, which describes in detail the Gothic War and the victory of the Byzantines in Sicily. The area is currently closed to the public and can be visited only on request, to the supervision of Ragusa.
