Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See, in German - Lago di Caldaro, in Italian) lies in a valley basin, approx. 4 km from the village centre of Caldaro and Termeno. Even if it is one of the largest lakes of South Tyrol, it has compact dimensions: The 1.8 km long and 0.9 km wide lake features a max. depth of 5.6 m and covers a surface of 155 ha. This has no effect on its popularity. In the hot summer months Lake Caldaro is filled with sun lovers, swimmers, windsurfers, sailors and nature lovers - four bathing establishments around the lake and a surf school are open from May to September. The lake itself is situated at 216 m a.s.l., dominated by the Castelchiaro ruin towering on a hill above it. The former fortress is the widely visible landmark of the area and a popular hiking destination with a stunning view on Lake Caldaro. Already at the beginning of May, the average water temperature rises to 17 to 19 degrees Celsius, in high summer it even touches 28 degrees Celsius. A similar water temperature is only reached by Lake Klopeiner in Carinthia, the southern-most region of Austria. Due to the southern and low position of the lake, also the air temperature is about 10 degrees higher than in the other surrounding areas. Caldaro is also a famous hot spot for windsurfers: Every day the Ora, a southern wind breeze blowing around midday from Lake Garda through the Valle dell’Adige valley, offers great conditions for this sport. Its southern shores, however, attract nature lovers and hikers: There’s the largest preserved wetland area between the Po Plain and the Alpine divide, the Lake Caldaro Biotope. The 7.5 km long Nature Experience Trail shows you Lake Caldaro in all its beauty.
