Mendoza, in the rain-shadow of the Andes, stopping wet winds from the Pacific, is the leading wine-making region in Argentina. 1000 wineries produce 70% of the country's wine. The dry and very sunny weather is ideal for wine production. Malbec is iconic, but not the only grape variety grown. The Vistandes Winery, on Route 60, 20km south-west of Mendoza, at Cruz de Piedra, Maipu, is one of the most modern wineries. It dates to 2006 and has the newest technology for wine production. The winery has the capacity to ferment and age 710, 000 litres of wine. Stainless steel tanks have the storage capacity to ferment 190, 000 litres. 350 oak barrels have the storage capacity to age 520, 000 litres for 6-8 months. The winery offers guided tours in both Spanish and English, with end of tour wine-tasting in a comfortable room with a fine view to the Andes (giving the winery its name). Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are red wine grape varieties grown. Torrontes is a white wine grape variety. The vineyard produces Gradum Wine, a premium Malbec, mature in oak barrels for 14 months.
