Young people playing football in the park. The Rosenborg Castle is seen through a lime avenue of still leafless lime trees. The King's Garden was established by King Christian IV in the early 17th century as a pleasure and kitchen garden in Renaissance style close to the Rosenborg Castle. The garden was opened to the public in the 1770s by J.F. Struensee. Today it is Copenhagen's most visited and popular park and is still an attractive playground and venue for entertainments and performances, not to mention the many picnics and birthday celebrations taking place there. Rosenborg Castle was originally built as a country summerhouse in 1606 and is an example of Christian IVs many architectural projects. The style is Dutch Renaissance typical for many buildings of that period. The Rosenborg Barracks, one of two barracks of the Royal Danish Life Guard, is located right next to the Rosenborg Castle, hence the starting point of the daily Royal Guard march to Amalienborg Castle as part of the Changing the Guard ceremony.
