Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) was a leading French Romantic painter who used bright color and dynamic treatment. He did this painting titled "Liberty Leading the People in 1830" to commemorate the 1830 French Revolution that led to the abdication of Charles X that same year. Delacroix personified liberty as a woman and has her walking over the bodies of those who fell in the battle and leading the others, with the French flag in one hand and a bayonetted musket in the other.
