Judy Garland 1960 Judy Garland at a welcome reception put on for her at EMI House in Manchester Square London Judy Garland at a welcome reception put on for her at EMI House in Manchester Square London Described as one of the greatest and most tragic of Hollywood s entertainers The Wizard of Oz made her a star yet MGM always insisted on playing her in child roles until she proved to the world that she had grown up by marrying composer David Rose after which she started playing adult roles However Garland became addicted to Barbiturates Her constant mood swings and suicidal tendencies were getting the better of her and in 1950 she had to quit the musical Annie Get Your Gun Halfway through 1950 she attempted suicide and upon her recovery MGM fired her In 1951 she divorced from her second husband Vincente Minnelli They had a daughter Liza She then married Sid Luft who took over management of her career and turned it round choreographing her triumphant performance at the London Palladium which was surpassed by her 1951 performance at New York s Palace Theatre Luft strong armed Warner Bros to bankroll A Star Is Born 1954 This was Garland s best film to date However Garland then fell into a depression when she lost the Academy Award to Grace Kelly Her subsequent live appearances were wildly inconsistent as were her film appearances Her third marriage was on the rocks by now but somehow she pulled herself together for an unforgettable live performance at Carnegie Hall which led indirectly yo her CBS series The Judy Garland Show which lasted a year before being pulled Garland divorced Luft in 1965 In 1969 she married nightclub owner Mickey Deems yet the marriage did neither party any good Her subsequent performances were probably her worst she was booed off stage during a three week engagement in a London nightclub On June 22nd 1969Judy Garland was found dead in her London apartment the victim of an ostensibly accidental overdose
