John Lewis’ sales surged by more than a quarter in the post-Christmas week as customers flocked to its clearance sales. Sales in the week to January 3 rose 27.4 per cent on the same period last year to £78.6m with the department store chain’s discounted clothes and electrical goods selling particularly strongly. The news was a welcome boost to John Lewis, which suffered a string of double-digit sales declines during November. In spite of a lucrative festive season, sales for the 23 weeks to January 3 are down 3.2 per cent year-on-year. Retailers have put in a mixed performance over the period, with many thumped by dropping sales and squeezed margins after they resorted to pre-Christmas discounting in an attempt to pull in custom.
