Joe Mercer wins the William Hill November handicap at Doncaster on the occasion of his last race of his career before going into retirement. 09/05/2003: The former champion jockey has spent the last 16 years as racing manager for the Maktoum family s Gainsborough Stud, although when 'smoking' - as he is still affectionately known to racing's insiders - called it a day after riding Old Rex to success in the 1985 November Handicap he was looking forward to keeping his hand in as a TV pundit interspersed with acting as agent to former weighing room colleagues Brent Thomson and Tony McGlone. Mercer never won the Derby and he has his father in law Harry Carr in part to thank for that. In the 1959 running of the race the Mercer ridden Fadalgo finished runner up to Parthia - ridden by Carr. However, he still landed his fair share of Classics with four St Legers to his credit, including the 1981 renewal which saw 40-1 shot Cut Above lower the colours of the ill-fated Shergar for the only time.
