ISLAND OF EIGG, SCOTLAND - 1st NOVEMBER 2007: John Booth, a director of the Eigg Heritage Trust and of Eigg Electric Ltd, stands in the rain with banks of solar cells behind him, capable together of producing 10 KW in bright sunshine. They are part of the island's new renewable energy electricity system that combine solar cells with 24 KW of wind power and 112 KW of hydro. "This is a sytem where we devised, built and raised the money (£1.6 million) ourselves. Until now everyone has had their own stand alone set-ups for power supply. It is surprising how excited everyone is getting. When the system goes live before Christmas we will be providing the island with a 24 hour continuous supply that will serve all the residents. It will make an enormous difference to everyone." "We will be capping the supply to provide everyone with the same maximum capacity - at 5KW for households and 10KW for larger businesses which I think will be an interesting social experiment."
