Former cricketer Ian Botham braved freezing conditions to perform the traditional ceremony of throwing a quaich of whisky into the water, before going out in the first fishing party of the Tay salmon season. * Mr Botham was remaining tight-lipped about newspaper reports of an extramarital affair with an Australian waitress. He said in a statement, on Sunday, January 14, 2001 "this is obviously a very difficult time for my family and friends, I am extremely sorry for the distress and embarrassment I have caused to them and in particular to my wife".
