Hong Kong. 13th June 2014. Riot police block the entrance to Hong Kong's Legislative Council building, the city's de facto parliament, as protesters opposed to the development of two new towns in the north-east New Territories try to break through. A Finance Committee meeting was taking place at the time to examine a government request for initial funding for engineering works at the sites concerned. Many of the demonstrators are villagers who are worried they will lose their homes, others are activists. Pro-democracy legislators on the committee, who are opposed to the development plan, say only large landowners and property developers will benefit. The committee eventually stopped meeting due to security fears. The New Territories development plan is part of Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung's initiative to provide more affordable housing. The protest follows a demonstration the previous Friday which managed to break through a security cordon and enter the lobby of the Legislative Council building, which is technically a public area. © Robert SC Kemp/Alamy Live News
