Harrogate Spring Flower Show, 21 - 24 April 2016, organised by the North of England Horticultural Society and held at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG2 8NZ. Garden designers and landscapers created show gardens to provide ideas and inspiration for members of the public and the latest gardening trends were promoted. The garden in this image, is the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) 'Tea for Two' entry, which won a Premier Gold Award. . Designed by Northumbrian landscaper Peter Cunliffe, the garden explored the origins of the afternoon ‘pick me up, ’ comparing the traditions of the English high tea with the Japanese tea ceremony. The garden, which featured an authentic Japanese Tea House, was designed to evoke an atmosphere of peaceful solitude, flowing effortlessly from East to West and to illustrate similarities between the two traditions. The outdoor waiting bench can be seen to the left. This is where guests would remain until summoned by their tea ceremony host. They would then proceed to a stone basin (in front of the bench) where they would ritually purify themselves by washing their hands and rinsing their mouths with water. After removing their footwear, they would enter the tea room through a small "crawling-in" door (nijiri-guchi) seen at the side of the teahouse.
