The wheel-shaped webs of golden orb weavers are stretched across an open space to trap flying insects. The web of the golden orb weaver is permanent, unlike the webs of other orb weavers which may be taken down at dawn. The webs are very strong and occasionally may accidentally trap small birds. You will know just how strong they are if you have walked into one at night. Female golden orb weavers rest upside down in the centre of the web with their forelegs facing downwards. The web also contains a vertical string of silk wrapped insect remains just above where she sits. The females are very large spiders, up to 45 mm in body length in the case of the enormous Nephila maculata, while males are only about 6 mm in length. Despite their great size these spiders are not considered dangerous. Females die once egg production is finished, after a lifespan of only 12 months.
