There are several contenders for England’s oldest windmill, Great Gransden being one of them. This open trestle post mill is undoubtedly 17th c., and a deed suggests it dates back to 1612, which is the earliest firm date associated with any surviving windmill. It last worked c.1912, and in the years that followed it was for a time owned by the Yugoslav Royal Family whilst they were living in exile at the mill house. By the 1980s it was in poor shape but was restored 1982-4, at which time it also became Grade II* listed, and although not in working order it is nevertheless still more-or-less complete. The mill is only just in Great Gransden - the road in front of it marks the parish boundary between Great and Little Gransden, and also the boundary between the historic counties of Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire.
